Jennifer Lynn Knapp (born April 12, 1974), known professionally as Jennifer Knapp, is an American singer,[1] who is based in Australia.[2] She released her debut album in 1997.[1]
Career[]
Knapp began performing whilst at college, leaving during her senior year to pursue music full-time. In 1996, she released the album Wishing Well independently, leading to her being signed by Gotee Records. In 1997, she released her debut album, Kansas,[1] peaking at number 11 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums Chart.[3]
Knapp's second album, Lay It Down, was released in 2000,[1] topping Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart[3] and also entering the Billboard 200.[4] Her third album, The Way I Am, was released in 2002,[5]peaking at number 10 on the Top Christian Albums chart.[3]
Knapp released her first secular album, Letting Go, in 2010.[6] In 2017, she released Love Comes Back Around.[7]
Personal Life[]
Knapp moved to Australia in 2002, later officially becoming a citizen of the country.[2] In 2010, she announced that she was in a same-sex relationship.[8]
Faith[]
Knapp became a Christian at college, whilst struggling with alcoholism. Speaking about her decision to come to Christ in a 2000 interview, Knapp recalled 'I couldn't even sleep. I was so excited the rest of the night. I was bouncing off the walls. I had a 7.30am theory class and I'm giddy and just blabbing on about how I've accepted Christ as my Saviour. And (my classmates) are looking at me like I've lost my mind.'[1]
After announcing she was in a same-sex relationship, Knapp stated that she still considered herself a 'person of faith'.[9] She expanded on this in a 2015 interview, remarking 'the word “Christian” is a single word that still challenges me perhaps more than any other ... but I cannot escape the life-changing experience of having understood just a portion of the grace through the lens of Jesus'.[10]
