Dc Talk were a three-person American rock band, consisting of Toby McKeehan, Michael Tait and Kevin Max.[1]

History[]

The trio met whilst studying at Liberty College in the 1980s. Max and Tait had previously been members of a group called The Connection Band, before joining with McKeehan to form DC Talk. The initials 'DC' stand for 'Decent Christian'.[1] Their first son recorded as a trio was entitled 'Heavenbound', and led to them being signed by ForeFront Records. After releasing their eponymous debut album, the trio toured as the opening act for DeGarmo & Key.[1]

In 1991, the trio released their second album, entitled Nu Thang. The album included the song 'Walls', the video of which premiered in the area in which the Ku Klux Klan was founded, to commemmorate Martin Luther King Jr's birthday. The band's third album, Free At Last, was released in 1993.[1]

The group released Jesus Freak in 1995,[2] reaching number 16 in the Billboard 200.[3] In the same year, they performed at crusades led by evangelist Billy Graham.[2] In 1998, the group signed a dual record deal with Forefront and Virgin, and released the album Supernatural,[4] which peaked at number 4 in the Billboard 200.[3] The group released a deluxe version of Free At Last in 2002 to mark the 10th anniversary of its release.[5]

In the early 2000s, the band announced that they would be on hiatus. Since then, McKeehan has embarked upon a solo career under the name TobyMac, Tait joined band Newsboys as lead singer, and Max joined Audio Adrenaline as lead singer.[6]

Faith[]

In a 1993 interview, McKeehan emphasised the importance of each member being accountable to each other: 'We think that at this time, right now, we're better together than we are apart. We're called to be together, and we're more useful to God together'. He added 'We can't continue to simply entertain Christians. We want to challenge them to take the Great Commission seriously'.[1]
