Andrew Peterson (born June 4, 1974)[1] is an American[2] folk/pop singer/songwriter who has been compared to Rich Mullins in writing style. Though previously on Essential, Andrew is now an independent artist. He plays guitar, Boozouki and Ocarina.
Career[]
Peterson began performing in 1996, when he toured America alongside his wife and guitarist Gabe Scott. His music was discovered by Derek Webb of Caedmon's Call, who invited him to perform at one of the band's upcoming shows, and subsequently their 1998 tour of America.[2]
Peterson signed with Essential/Watershed Records in 1999, and released his debut album, Carried Along, in 2000. The album was named as one of the Top 10 albums of 2000 by CCM Magazine. His second album, Clear to Venus, was released in September 2001. His third album, Love and Thunder, was concieved after Peterson had toured America following the 9/11 attacks. The album was produced by Steve Hindalong.[2]
In 2008, Peterson signed with Centricity Music, releasing his first album with the label, The Resurrection Letters, Vol II, in October of the same year.[3] His next album, Counting Stars, was released in 2010, and contained the single 'Dancing In The Minefields',[4] which became his first entry on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs Chart, peaking at number 13.[5]
In 2014, Peterson released After All These Years, a collection of some of his previous songs alongside three new songs.[6] In 2015, Peterson released Burning Edge of Dawn, which became his first album to reach the Top 100 of the Billboard 200 Chart.[7]
In 2018, Peterson released Resurrection Letters, Vol. 1, which included the song Is He Worthy?, which was later covered by Chris Tomlin;[8] Tomlin's version peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart.[9]
Personal Life[]
Outside of music, Peterson has also released a series of childrens' books. He is also the founder of The Rabbit Room, a conference bringing together people in Nashville involved in the creative arts.[4]
Faith[]
Peterson places a strong emphasis on the term 'sub-creation' as coined by J R R Tolkien; the idea that, as created beings, humans have a God-given urge to create.[2] He also sees the importance of imagination in faith; he remarks 'every molecule in the universe belongs to the Lord, and there is a seat at the table for the nerdy kid who likes fantasy novels'.[10]
